PV and Solar Terminology: A Practical Guide for Buyers

On a quotation, “panel,” “module,” and “system” are not harmless word choices. An importer may ask for one item and receive a price that assumes another. EPC engineers then have to reconcile dimensions, current ratings, packing details, or missing BOS scope. This guide is written for that point in the buying process. It translates common PV and solar language into the information that belongs in a datasheet review, RFQ, or purchase order.

PV and Solar: What Is the Difference?

Solar covers more than electricity. The same label may refer to PV equipment, water-heating collectors, or building design that uses sunlight without producing power. PV is narrower: photovoltaic cells turn light into direct-current electricity.
Sales teams often shorten PV module to solar panel. That shortcut is fine in conversation, but a quotation needs a sharper boundary. State whether you are buying modules only, a package with inverter and mounting items, or a complete system. If the scope is vague, two suppliers can answer the same inquiry with offers that are impossible to compare.

Core PV and Solar Terms Buyers Should Know

An array is a group of electrically connected modules. A complete PV system includes the array and other equipment needed to deliver usable electricity. Depending on the project, that may include mounting structures, cabling, protection devices, inverters, monitoring equipment, and transformers. These supporting items are often grouped under the term balance of system, or BOS.

What Datasheet Terms Matter in Procurement?

Treat Pmax as a comparison point, not a production forecast. It comes from standard test conditions. Once installed, the module works under changing sunlight and temperature, with losses from soiling, shade, cables, and other system components.
Voltage and current ratings are equally important. Voc and Isc help engineers check maximum system voltage and protective-device requirements. Vmp and Imp describe operation near the maximum power point and are used when matching strings to an inverter's operating window. Buyers should also review the power tolerance, maximum series-fuse rating, dimensions, weight, connector type, and mechanical-load information.
Efficiency shows how much module area is required for a given rated power. The temperature coefficient indicates how output changes as cell temperature rises. Neither value should be judged in isolation. A crowded commercial roof may prioritize power density, while transport limits, tracker compatibility, or structural loading may be more important for a ground-mounted project. Technology Labels: N-Type, TOPCon, and Bifacial

Do not approve a model because the sales sheet says N-type or TOPCon. N-type describes the silicon base; TOPCon refers to the passivated contact used in the cell. Those labels help identify the technology family, but the purchasable item is still the complete model. Compare its electrical limits, dimensions, construction, degradation terms, certificate scope, and warranty documents.
A bifacial module can receive irradiance on its rear side, but the word bifacial does not tell a buyer how much extra energy a project will gain. Rear irradiance changes with surface reflectance, clearance, pitch, tracker geometry, shading, and dirt. Ask the project designer for a modeled result using the proposed layout. A generic gain percentage should not be copied into the business case.

System and Project Terms

In PV and solar procurement, commercial and industrial, or C&I, usually describes systems installed for businesses, factories, warehouses, or other non-residential facilities. Utility-scale PV refers to large projects developed primarily to supply electricity to a grid or power purchaser. Rooftop and ground-mounted describe installation formats, not module technologies.
An on-grid system operates with a utility connection. An off-grid system must support loads without relying on the grid and normally requires storage or another source of generation. A hybrid system combines more than one energy source or operating mode. These definitions should not be used as substitutes for an electrical design.
ESS means energy storage system. It may include battery cells, racks, a battery-management system, power-conversion equipment, controls, and safety components. How to Use These Terms in an RFQ or Purchase Order

For PV and solar projects, a useful RFQ identifies the product precisely enough for the supplier and the buyer’s engineer to review the same configuration. At minimum, commercial buyers should specify:
  • Brand and complete model code
  • Required power class and acceptable tolerance
  • Electrical ratings and system-voltage requirement
  • Module construction, dimensions, weight, and connector details
  • Required certification scope for the destination market
  • Warranty issuer and the warranty documents to be reviewed
  • Order quantity, packing requirements, and requested shipping terms
  • Inspection or document requirements, such as datasheets, packing lists, or EL evidence when agreed
The purchase contract should also define which party approves substitutions. A similar wattage does not make two modules interchangeable. Changes in dimensions, current, connectors, mounting-hole positions, pallet configuration, or certification coverage can affect the system and shipment.

Think of the module as the boxed product on the pallet. Once modules are wired together at the site, they form an array.
Does a higher module wattage always mean a better choice?
Not by itself. Higher nameplate power can lower the number of units, yet a larger or heavier module may create new layout, handling, electrical, or tracker constraints.
Is bifaciality the same as bifacial energy gain?
No. Bifaciality is measured under defined test conditions. Rear-side yield belongs to the project model and will change with the site and mounting arrangement.
